The only way to know what your system is actually doing is to measure it. Testing your home’s water pressure is a straightforward process that takes under ten minutes and gives you a concrete number to work with rather than guessing based on feel.

- Adjustable wrench (if the bib connection needs snugging)
- Notepad or phone to record readings

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Choose the right test location.
An outdoor hose bib or the laundry room faucet works best as a test point. These connections sit close to the main supply line and give a reading that most accurately represents the pressure entering the home. Avoid testing at a fixture with a built-in flow restrictor, as it will produce a lower reading than the supply line actually delivers.
- Close all other water outlets in the home.
Turn off every faucet, shut down the ice maker, pause any running appliances, and confirm no one is using water anywhere in the house. Open outlets during the test and pull pressure, skewing the reading lower than it should be.
- Attach the pressure gauge.
Thread the pressure gauge onto the hose bib by hand first, then snug it with an adjustable wrench. Do not overtighten. A hand-tight connection with a quarter turn of the wrench seats it securely without risking thread damage on older outdoor faucets.
- Turn the water on fully.
Open the hose bib completely and watch the gauge needle settle. Give it five to ten seconds to stabilize before recording the reading. Residential water pressure falls between 45 and 80 PSI under normal conditions. Anything below 40 PSI qualifies as low pressure. A reading above 80 PSI puts unnecessary strain on pipes, fixtures, and appliances throughout the home.
- Take readings at different times of day.
Municipal water pressure fluctuates with neighborhood usage patterns. Test in the early morning, midday, and evening to build a picture of how your pressure behaves across different demand periods. Consistent low readings across all time slots point to a home-side issue. Pressure that drops only during peak hours suggests a supply-side problem originating with the municipality.
- Compare readings at multiple locations.
Test the interior faucet after completing the outdoor reading. A significant drop between the outdoor bib and an interior fixture can indicate a partially closed main shutoff valve, a failing pressure regulator, or a restricted section of pipe between the two.
Safety Warnings
- Never test pressure at a fixture showing signs of corrosion or damage around the connection point. Attaching a gauge to a compromised fitting can cause it to fail under pressure.
- Keep the reading below 80 PSI as an operating standard. High pressure accelerates wear on washing machine hoses, toilet fill valves, and water heater connections. These components fail faster under sustained high pressure and often do so without warning.
- On older homes with galvanized plumbing, handle hose bib connections carefully. Corroded threads can crack or strip with little force.
When to Call a Professional
A pressure gauge gives you the number. What it cannot tell you is why the number looks the way it does. Readings outside the normal range, inconsistent pressure across different fixtures, or pressure that drops sharply over a short period all indicate something worth investigating further. The cause could be a deteriorating pressure regulator, a partially obstructed supply line, an unreported municipal pressure issue, or an active leak pulling pressure away from the rest of the system.
