How To Use A Drain Snake

How To Use A Drain Snake

Problem Overview

When a standard plunger fails to dislodge a blockage, a drain snake, also known as a plumbing auger, is the next line of defense. This tool consists of a flexible metal cable that travels deep into your pipes to physically break apart or retrieve obstructions that are too far down for surface-level methods.

Clogs made of hair, grease, or small foreign objects often become lodged in the P-trap or the curved sections of the drainage line. Knowing how to use a drain snake correctly allows you to reach these hidden trouble spots without having to disassemble your entire plumbing system.

Tools Needed

  • A hand-cranked drain auger (drain snake)
  • Heavy-duty work gloves
  • A bucket
  • Rags or paper towels
  • A set of adjustable wrenches

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the workspace by removing the sink stopper or the grate covering the drain. If you are working on a bathroom sink, you may need to go under the cabinet and remove the horizontal pivot rod to pull the stopper out entirely. Place a bucket underneath to catch any trapped water or debris.

Step 2: Insert the head of the snake into the drain opening. For kitchen or bathroom sinks, you will often get better results by removing the P-trap (the U-shaped pipe) and inserting the snake directly into the pipe protruding from the wall. This bypasses the tightest bends and gives you a straight shot at the main obstruction.

Step 3: Loosen the thumbscrew at the front of the auger drum and pull out the cable until you feel resistance. Tighten the screw back down. Slowly rotate the handle in a clockwise direction while applying steady forward pressure. This rotation helps the head of the snake “walk” through the pipe’s elbows and curves.

Step 4: Continue feeding the cable until the resistance increases significantly, which indicates you have reached the blockage. Avoid forcing the cable; instead, keep cranking the handle to allow the auger head to bore into the material. You may feel a slight “give” as the snake breaks through or grabs onto the debris.

Step 5: Once the clog is engaged, slowly retract the cable by winding it back into the drum.

Step 6: Reassemble any pipes you removed and run hot water at full pressure for several minutes. This flushes away any remaining fragments of the clog and confirms that the drainage is clear. If the water still drains slowly, repeat the process to remove any secondary blockages further down the line.

Safety Warnings

Always wear thick work gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges of the metal cable and the bacteria found inside drains. Never use a drain snake in a pipe where you have recently poured liquid chemical cleaners; the cable can splash these caustic substances back onto your skin or eyes, causing severe burns. Use gentle pressure when navigating the cable through older thin-walled pipes, as excessive force can puncture a weakened line and cause a flood inside your walls.

When to Call a Professional

If the clog persists even after using a drain snake, or if you notice signs of pipe damage, it’s time to call a professional plumber. Drain snakes are effective for most clogs, but more severe blockages may require advanced equipment such as a sewer camera to locate the issue. A plumber can safely and effectively resolve persistent clogs, pipe corrosion, or tree root intrusion.
