Problem Overview
In the event of a major leak, a natural disaster, or a fire, cutting the fuel supply at the source is the most effective way to prevent a catastrophic explosion. Gas leaks are often identified by a distinct rotten egg odor, a whistling sound near a pipe, or dead vegetation over a buried line.
Unlike water leaks, gas hazards are invisible and highly combustible. Knowing how to shut off gas to your house and which tool to use allows you to act fast during a high-stress situation.
Tools Needed
- A 12-inch or larger adjustable wrench
- A specialized gas shut-off tool (optional)
- A bright, battery-operated flashlight
- Thick work gloves
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Locate your gas meter, typically on the side or rear of the house, or occasionally in a dedicated cabinet. Use your flashlight to identify the main service pipe coming out of the ground and entering the meter. The shut-off valve is usually located on this incoming pipe, slightly below the meter itself.
Step 2: Identify the shut-off valve. This is typically a rectangular metal tab, often called a “tang,” that sits on the pipe. When the gas is flowing, the long side of this rectangular tab is aligned vertically with the pipe. To stop the flow, you will need to rotate this tab so it sits crosswise, or perpendicular, to the pipe.
Step 3: Fit your adjustable wrench or gas shut-off tool onto the rectangular tab. Ensure the grip is firm and centered to avoid slipping, which could damage the metal. If the valve has not been moved in years, it may be stiff, so you might need to apply steady, firm pressure to begin the rotation.
Step 4: Turn the wrench one-quarter turn in either direction until the tab is perpendicular to the pipe. Many valves have two holes, one on the tab and one on the valve body, that will line up perfectly when the gas is completely off. Once these holes align, the valve is fully closed and the fuel supply to the house is severed.
Step 5: Check any outdoor gas appliances, such as a pool heater or a barbecue connected to the main line, to verify that the supply has stopped.
Safety Warnings
If you smell a strong gas odor, do not stop to find a wrench; evacuate everyone from the premises immediately and call for help from a safe distance. Never use a flashlight or cell phone in the immediate vicinity of a suspected leak, as the tiny spark from a switch can cause an explosion. Most importantly, if you shut off the gas, do not attempt to turn it back on yourself.
When to Call a Professional
If the shut-off valve is severely corroded, seized, or broken, you must contact your local utility company or a licensed technician immediately. Attempting to force a stuck gas valve can result in a snapped pipe and an uncontrollable high-pressure leak.
